RV Insurance in Ontario: What Motorhome Owners Need to Know

The Short Answer

Ontario motorhomes are classified as motor vehicles and require mandatory auto insurance including minimum $200,000 third-party liability, accident benefits, and uninsured motorist coverage. Most RV owners carry $1,000,000 or more in liability given the size and collision severity of motorhomes. Optional coverages like comprehensive, collision, contents, vacation liability, and seasonal lay-up provisions are typically available through specialty RV insurers.

Motorhomes and RVs represent a significant investment — a quality Class A diesel pusher can cost as much as a modest house, and even a smaller Class C can represent $80,000 to $150,000 or more. Understanding how Ontario RV insurance works, what’s mandatory, and what optional coverages make sense for your situation is an important part of RV ownership.

How Ontario Defines a Motorhome for Insurance Purposes

A motorhome is a self-propelled recreational vehicle — it has its own engine and doesn’t need to be towed. In Ontario, motorhomes are registered as motor vehicles and are subject to the same mandatory insurance requirements as automobiles under the Insurance Act and the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act.

The three classes of motorhomes are:

  • Class A — large bus-style coaches, typically 30 to 45 feet, with the driver’s cab integrated into the main body
  • Class B — van conversions, sometimes called camper vans, built on a standard van chassis
  • Class C — coach-style units built on a truck chassis with a distinctive cab-over bunk

Each class is insured through auto insurance markets, but specialty RV insurers and brokers who focus on recreational vehicles often have access to products better tailored to motorhome owners than a standard auto carrier.

Mandatory Coverage in Ontario

Like any motor vehicle operated on Ontario public roads, a motorhome requires:

Third-party liability — minimum $200,000 per the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act, though most motorhome owners carry $1,000,000 or $2,000,000 given the size and potential severity of an RV collision.

Accident benefits — statutory coverage for your medical expenses, income replacement, and other benefits if you’re injured in an accident, regardless of fault.

Direct compensation — property damage — if another driver is at fault for a collision, this covers damage to your vehicle.

Uninsured automobile coverage — protection if you’re struck by an uninsured driver.

Optional Coverages Worth Considering

Beyond mandatory coverage, RV-specific policies typically offer:

Comprehensive and collision — physical damage coverage for your motorhome. Given the cost of RV repairs, comprehensive and collision coverage is strongly worth carrying, particularly on newer units.

Contents coverage — personal belongings inside the RV, including clothing, electronics, and recreational equipment. Standard auto policies typically provide minimal contents coverage, and for a motorhome used for extended travel, dedicated contents coverage matters.

Vacation liability — liability coverage that applies when your motorhome is parked and being used as a residence, not while in motion. This is separate from the auto liability that applies while driving.

Emergency expense coverage — roadside assistance, hotel accommodation, and transportation if your motorhome breaks down far from home.

Seasonal Lay-Up

If you store your motorhome for the winter months and it’s not driven on public roads during that period, a seasonal lay-up provision can reduce your premium by suspending collision and comprehensive coverage (or reducing it) during the storage period. Liability and certain other coverages may remain in effect depending on the policy.

US Travel Coverage

Many Ontario RV owners travel to the United States during winter months. Standard Ontario auto policies extend coverage to the US, but confirm with your broker that your liability limits meet the requirements of the states you’ll be travelling through, and that your physical damage coverage applies south of the border.

Full-Timer Coverage

If you live in your motorhome full-time rather than using it only for seasonal recreation, your insurance needs are different from a part-time user. Standard seasonal RV policies may not adequately cover someone for whom the RV is a primary residence. Full-timer coverage is a specialty product that addresses this.
